THERE were busy little bees at Tooradin Primary School last month as many helpers got their hands dirty to ensure the school’s garden was ready for spring.
Staff members and the school community were given a helping hand from the 1st Cranbourne Venturers on Saturday 2 August for a working bee at the garden used for the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG) program.
SAKG kitchen specialist Fiona Berkholz said the working bee was made possible thanks to a generous donation of mulch from Brown’s Sawdust and Shavings.
“We are very fortunate to have wonderful sponsors for our program,” she said.
“Barrow loads of weeds were removed and a good thick layer of mulch put down to keep in the moisture over the hotter months, as well as restrict weed grown.
“The students love their garden and really enjoy getting out into the fresh air and growing seasonal produce to use in our kitchen, but keeping the weeds under control can be difficult.”
The volunteers finished the working bee off with a big afternoon tea catered by the school kitchen.
Anyone who wants to donate to the school garden, particularly seedlings or fresh produce to use in the kitchen, are encouraged to contact Ms Berkholz on 0427 770 516 or the school office on 5998 3321.
