Call for sports support

By BRIDGET COOK

THE development of a soccer centre, delivery of a multi-use stadium in Clyde and a regional sports park are the priorities of a $442.5 million blueprint for leisure in Casey.
The City of Casey is currently seeking feedback from the community on the draft Leisure Facilities Development Plan which aims to increase sport and leisure opportunities in the area.
The plan outlines the council’s vision for $442.5 million of investment into existing and new infrastructure over the next 20 years into leisure facilities, funded largely by the council with support from developers and other levels of government.
The plan highlights a number of priorities including the development of a Soccer Centre of Excellence at Casey Fields and the provision of a significant multi-use stadium in Clyde for basketball, badminton, table tennis and martial arts.
The acquisition of a regional park, south of the urban growth boundary, to cater for sports such as softball, baseball, rugby union, rugby league, athletics, hockey and gymnastics is another priority for the council.
City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said he was proud that the council was investing so heavily in the future of sport, leisure and recreation in Casey.
“Getting involved in sport and leisure activities has the potential to improve physiological and mental health, contribute to personal development, improve well-being and assist in fostering a stronger community,” he said.
“Specifically, the 2014 plan considers changes to the Urban Growth Boundary in accordance with future population projections, which will impact on demand for facilities and also revises provision ratios and general standards for the 17 most popular sports across Victoria.
“Such an extensive investment into local sporting facilities will also allow residents to be able to train to a higher standard and allow a more streamlined entrance into professional sporting pathways.”
The council is encouraging residents to view the draft Leisure Facilities Development Plan (2014) and supporting reference document at www.casey.vic.gov.au/currentconsultations and provide feedback by Wednesday 17 September.
Residents are also invited to view the supporting reference document by request to the sport and leisure team on 9705 5200.
