CRANBOURNE has suffered its first taste of defeat in the SEJ Youth Girls Tier 1 competition after Beaconsfield pulled off a surprise four-point win in the major semi-final at Casey Fields on Saturday.
Cranbourne is not done with yet, and will face Mornington at 9am this Saturday at the same venue, but will go in with their ears pricked after the ultimate wake-up call.
Beaconsfield jumped the minor premiers to take a nine-point lead at quarter time, but a stunning 5.0 to 0.2 second term gave Cranbourne a 19-point lead at half time. Beacy responded once again, kicking 3.2 and keeping Cranbourne scoreless in the third term to lead by a point at the final break.
Both teams kicked two goals each in the final term with Beaconsfield holding on in a thriller.
Karly Tapner and Teegan Dale kicked two each for the winners, who also had Tay Clayton and Georgia Fisher play important roles. Cranbourne was well served by Sarah Wallace and Courtney Jones, who slotted three each, while Georgia Gourlay and Hayley Wildes were others to shine.
Mornington defeated Scoresby by 45 points in the minor semi-final with Georgia Walker’s three goals leading the way.
TIER 2
HAMPTON Park has progressed to the next stage of the Tier 2 finals series after defeating Fountain Gate by 12 points in heavy fog at Casey Fields.
Goals to Erin Pitchford and Nicola Weston were enough to secure victory for the Redbacks and impress their coach Sarah Bishop.
“Pretty good win … they all stood out pretty well … they all played a really good game,” Bishop said after the match.
