Comets soar over Eagles

CASEY Comets showed their true Women’s Premier League capabilities in a 6-1 demolition of Boroondara Eagles.
Facing former team-mate Alex Gummer’s Eagles, the Comets lit up Knox Regional Soccer Centre with a flurry of goals.
Angela Durston-Ryan slammed a pair into the back of the Boroondara net while an own goal to Ally Gayfer and three more Casey super-strikes from Tayla Vlaeminck, Brittany Dudley-Smith and Rachel Binning sealed the emphatic five-goal demolition.
Making a late run towards the finals – Casey sits eighth on 19 points – trailing the top four by 10 and fifth place Heidelberg by six.
It’s an achievable challenge, with the next step in the journey starting this week against Sandringham SC at home on Friday night.
NPL1 AND STATE LEAGUES – MEN AND WOMEN
Dandenong City kept its fortress secure as it claimed a 2-1 win over FC Bulleen Lions at home, led by Shaun Filipovic who scored a brace.
The win boosts Dandenong City to 10th on the NPL1 ladder and the City boys face Kingston City FC away on Monday night from 8.30pm.
Berwick City and Doveton SC both fought out tough contests in the their catch-up round matches as the City boys knocked off Nunawading City 2-1 and the Doves flew 1-1 against Mooroolbark.
David Di Iorio and captain Orlando Mejias drilled the match winners for Berwick City while Doveton’s key strike came off the boot of Gary Davidson. Berwick City will host Mooroolbark and Doveton SC is at home to Frankston Pines.
Berwick City women was beaten 0-4 by Doncaster Rovers and remains equal last on points with Preston Lions, well and truly in the relegation zone. Berwick City faces South Yarra at home on Sunday.
