FREIGHT links projects will deliver a boost to business in the south east, Ports Minister David Hodgett said last week.
The 2014-’15 State Budget included up to $9.1 billion to improve port connections and take trucks off local roads.
Mr Hodgett said the budget provided $58 million, including a $38 million Commonwealth co-contribution, to establish Port Rail Shuttle services, developed in partnership with the private sector.
“Which will improve the efficiency of containerised freight transport throughout Melbourne by connecting the port to major outer suburban freight hubs by rail,” he said.
“The project will be based around the development of an efficient, dedicated rail terminal at the port connected to a system of private intermodal terminals within existing freight precincts at Somerton, Altona and Dandenong South.”
Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the freight investment package included funding to build Victoria’s rail freight network as well as critical road connections, including the East West Link.
“The full East West Link will dramatically improve connectivity across Melbourne, provide more direct routes to key destinations, including the port, the airport and the city, alleviating pressure on the Monash-West Gate corridor,” he said.
