TOORADIN Primary School students showed off the skills they have been learning in the garden and kitchen when they held their first produce stall last week.
Students involved in the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program conducted a market stall on Thursday 3 April where they sold a wide variety of pickles, relishes, jams and fresh produce – most of which was from the school garden.
The school’s kitchen specialist Fiona Berkholz said it was a great opportunity to showcase the program and demonstrate the skills students were learning through their involvement with cooking classes.
She said the children had so much fun in the classes and were very pleased with what they sold at the market stall.
“The program is based around locally produced, sustainably grown, healthy ingredients,” she said.
“Students are encouraged to not only help grow their own food within the school, but to also discover new tastes and textures through firstly cooking produce, then sitting down together as a group to enjoy a meal.
“They are also expected to clean up after themselves – and they do a pretty good job overall.”
The stall raised more than $200, which will go towards maintaining equipment and purchasing new items for the kitchen.
Ms Berkholz said parent helpers were key to keeping the program running and urged anyone interested in helping in the kitchen or garden to contact her on 0427 770 516 or to ring Tooradin Primary School directly.
