School harmony

By BRIDGET COOK

CORAL Park Primary School went globetrotting from their classrooms on Friday as they celebrated their school’s cultural, linguistic and religious diversity.
To mark Harmony Day, the Hampton Park school held a number of festivities from cooking to dancing and everything in between.
Students wore their cultural dress or dressed in colours of the flag from their country of heritage or orange – the colour that represents Harmony Day.
The school’s international student co-ordinator Katrina Holland said the students loved the day and really enjoyed sharing stories and food from their cultures.
“They also enjoy participating in the performances and dressing up in their cultural clothes,” she said.
“Coral Park celebrates Harmony Day as we believe it is important to teach diversity and accept and learn about the multicultural society we live in.
“It is also a very important day for our school as we have over half of our students who speak another language at home and a community coming from more than 30 different countries.
“It provides the opportunity for students to share their stories and culture with their peers.”
