Rain or shine, they’re happy to celebrate

Mahshid, Mahvash, Farida and Zohal were all smiles as they got into the spirit of the festival.

A RAINBOW appeared among the darkened clouds in Lynbrook on Saturday as a large crowd turned out for the HoIi Festival of Colours.
More than 500 people off all ages and cultures celebrated the traditional Hindu festival where the crowd covered each other in coloured powder, enjoyed entertainment from Bollywood dancers and chowed down on an Indian feast.
There were a couple of hours of fun at Banjo Paterson Park, before a stormed rolled in about 6pm – but that didn’t affect most as they stayed on to dance in the rain.
LRA events manager Vanessa Watson said despite the rain, the event was extremely successful even though the Bollywood moonlit cinema screening had to be cancelled due to the weather.
“Everyone in attendance had an amazing time and we have been so excited and enthused by the feedback we have received,” she said.
“The powdered area was a huge hit, and was enjoyed by all ages, and by people from many cultures.
“Even during the heaviest of the rain, people still enjoyed the colour area and were seen dancing in the rain.
“Holi traditionally has a water element and our committee did discuss rigging up an overhead irrigation system to have a wet holy area.
“We decided against it for logistical reasons but Mother Nature went ahead with the idea anyway.”
