Too much granted

In relation to the article It’s Two Cheers for Council (News, 20 Febryuary), it’s wonderful to see three of Casey’s residents competing on the world stage and I wish them all the very best in their endeavours.
I have some reservation, however, about council giving money to residents.
In this instance the council gave money to residents to participate in an activity that they presumably can’t afford.
I believe the issue of grants and ward funding needs to be reviewed.
In this day and age of belt tightening and ever soaring council rates, I find it difficult to understand why a recipient of a grant or ward fund should receive money before a service or capital improvement is delivered.
Jim Papalois,
Endeavour Hills.
