A CRANBOURNE South property owner has caused a stink with the council for not disposing of effluent and waste properly.
The City of Casey recently prosecuted a local property owner for allowing the illegal discharge of septic tank waste water from a property in Cranbourne South.
The property owner was found guilty of illegal septic tank waste water discharge and not complying with a Council Improvement Notice at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 6 February.
The resident was fined $3000 and ordered to pay council costs of $4070.
City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said it was a timely reminder to residents and those not connected to reticulated sewerage to comply with council requirements and EPA legislation when disposing of effluent and waste.
“The council will continue to actively investigate and pursue people illegally discharging septic tank waste in the community,” he said.
“Property owners who use septic tanks should be aware that they must obtain permits from council’s Environmental Health Unit before installing, altering or using a newly-installed septic tank system.
“The City of Casey is committed to protecting, maintaining and enhancing the health and safety of all residents living in Casey and will do so by ensuring all rules and regulations are followed.”
Poorly-maintained septic systems are a leading cause of serious water and environmental pollution while also presenting health risks, causing odours and attracting vermin and insects.
The council urged residents using septic tank systems to carry out regular maintenance to ensure their systems continued to work effectively.
