EARTH friendly ideas will be the order of the day at Cardinia Shire Council’s 2014 Sustainability Expo at the Cardinia Cultural Centre, Lakeside Boulevard, Pakenham, early next month.
Cardinia Shire mayor Graeme Moore said there would be something for everyone at the expo – to be held from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 1 March.
“Last year’s expo was a fun day out, and I am looking forward to it again this year,” Cr Moore said.
“This event is not about making people feel guilty. Instead, it will offer inspiring, achievable and affordable ideas to help us all be a little kinder to the earth and live more sustainable lives.”
He said Expo highlights this year would include free children’s activities, earth-friendly products to browse or buy, including skin care and baby ware, fair trade products, including jewellery and gifts, bike riding activity course and spot prizes for riding a bike to the expo, renewable energy alternatives displays, solar alternatives from panels to LED lighting, energy and water saving solutions with electrical and plumbing tradespeople available to answer queries, local organic foods and wines and blending smoothies with pedal power and plant giveaways and weed identification tips.
One of the more unique stands this year will be the ‘Bike’n’Blend’ activity which gives residents the chance to blend their own smoothie using pedal power. Cyclists can then take their empty biodegradable smoothie cup to the community garden stand for free vegie seeds to plant at home.
The expo will also include the ‘Future Spark’ competition.
To take part, residents need to gather a team and register to cycle to generate the most electricity. Winners will share in a $1000 prize pool of fantastic earth-friendly and healthy prizes.
In the spirit of sustainability, residents are encouraged to bring their reusable bags and drink bottles, and consider leaving their car at home in favour of public transport, riding or walking to the event.
“The Sustainability Expo will amuse and motivate residents of all ages to be cleaner and greener, so come along, bring the children and enjoy the many great displays, activities and demonstrations,” Cr Moore said.
