Dodgy contractors abound

CONSUMER Affairs Victoria has warned Casey residents to be cautious of dodgy contractors, after the area recorded one of the highest number of complaints last year.
Casey residents contacted Consumer Affairs Victoria 49 times regarding contractor delays and failure to complete work in 2013.
It was the third worst area in the state for complaints, coming in behind Whittlesea with 56 and Brimbank with 53.
Consumer Affairs Victoria director Claire Noone warned homeowners to protect themselves by choosing the right company or person for a project.
“It’s very important that you do your homework when choosing a handyman, tradesperson or builder for any job,” she said.
“It will undoubtedly save you time, money and heartache in the long run.”
Anyone planning to have work carried out on their property this year is urged to visit www.consumer.vic.gov.au and find the ‘building and renovating’ section for checklists and information.
Consumer Affairs Victoria has offered the following tips for when you choose a contractor:
Get at least three quotes on the same detailed description of the work you want done
Check the company’s reputation by doing an online search, independently confirming business details and contacting referees
Ensure the contractor holds a registration or a licence. You should also check if the company or person has relevant qualifications before they start
Are confident that you can communicate with the company about any problems that may arise
Have a written contract for all work – even small jobs – that clearly specifies the work and total cost. You should also document any changes from the agreed initial work
Never pay the full amount up-front.
