A FOOTBALL club that caters to disadvantaged members of the community is hoping its move to Cranbourne will drum up a fresh crop of players to ensure the club’s longevity.
The MIDDWAY Cobras Football Team has relocated from Doveton to Lawson Poole Reserve in Cranbourne North in a bid to get more people involved.
The team plays as part of the RecLink league, which is designed to give everyone the chance to participate in football with a focus on team work, confidence and improving self-esteem.
Club president and coach Gary Lambert encouraged people to get involved.
“Reclink aims to give people who would not normally get a chance to play football the opportunity to do so,” he said.
“That includes people struggling with mental health issues, recovering substance users, people with physical or mental disabilities or unemployed people.
“We also have other people such as those who run their own business play and are mentors.
“Unlike other teams, our players are not required to pay registration fees or make financial contributions towards running the club.
“The club hopes that moving to Cranbourne will encourage young locals to be part of the team and ensure its sustainability.”
The Cobras, who have players aged from 16 to 60, have had great success in the past 12 years, winning nine premierships.
Mr Lambert said as well as players, they were also looking for volunteers to help around the club and sponsorship.
“Our team has been operating since 2001, and we need to raise over $8000 to provide uniforms, boots, medical supplies including tape and oil, ground hire, bus hire for away games, trophies, umpires payments and other expenses incurred each year,” he said.
“We also encourage volunteer assistance, as there are always jobs to do, particularly on game days.”
Anyone interested in joining the team, volunteering or sponsoring the club, can call Mr Lambert on 0425 763 072.
