THE City of Casey has come a long way in 25 years and that was evident last month when Lang Lang Primary School dug up a time capsule.
The school retrieved the time capsule in November after it was buried in 1988 as part of the school’s centenary celebrations.
A 25-year-old link to Casey’s past was found within the capsule, with items addressed to today’s council from the former Shire of Cranbourne.
Contents of the time capsule included a letter to the future ‘Councillors and Staff of the Future – Year 2013’, and a 1988 Shire of Cranbourne Information Directory.
The council learnt that the former Shire of Cranbourne’s operating budget was $28 million for 60,000 residents, compared to the City of Casey’s current budget of $286.1m to service more than 270,000 residents.
City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said it was interesting to revisit the work of the council’s predecessors and compare it to today’s operations.
“It’s remarkable how dramatically things have changed but that the purpose of the work, to deliver first class services and facilities for the community, remains the same,” he said.
“The Shire of Cranbourne was thrilled to participate in the Lang Lang Primary School Time Capsule Project in 1988 and the City of Casey in 2013 is equally thrilled that it did.
“This is a unique reminder of our city’s history and the processes and people that were pivotal in its development.”
