A MURAL depicting both the heritage and future aspirations of students has been unveiled at Hampton Park Secondary College.
The painted mural, which was unveiled on Friday, was a collaboration between Monash University and a Year 8 Hampton Park Secondary College students.
The project was aimed at being a creative team building activity, which complimented classroom curriculum around aspirational concepts.
The mural is part of a larger university and school project – Aspirations – designed to encourage students to think about university as a desirable post-school option.
Under the guidance of Monash University Masters of Teaching student Elizabeth Aitkens, the students were asked to contribute a theme, help design and then paint the mural.
Julie Faulkner, from the Faculty of Education, said what began as a promising idea evolved over 2013 to light up the school recreation area in colour and story.
“What was once a plain brick wall now shimmers with representations of students’ countries of origin and symbols of their future hopes,” he said.
“The Great Wall of China sits alongside the Eureka building, palm trees and Big Ben, Flinders Street station, mountain ranges, Chinese and Middle Eastern dwellings.
“Balloons rise toward the sun carrying young painters’ passions and anticipations for what might come.”
