High stakes for locals

By DAVID NAGEL

PEARCEDALE trainer Jason Thompson will need to hold out some of his closest neighbours if he’s to make it back-to-back wins in the $500,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup (515m) at Sandown Park next Thursday night.
Thompson, who won last year’s edition of the world’s richest greyhound race with Got A Moment, has the fastest qualifier for next week’s final after Black Magic Opal pinged from box 6 to run a lightning-fast 29.41.
Black Magic Opal’s biggest threat could come from Peter Rocket, trained in Pearcedale by Keith Hellmuth, while Devon Meadows pair Proven Maddy (Wayne Vassallo) and Shifty Sticka (Paul Anderton) loom as other serious threats.
