Gripped by fear

By BRIDGET COOK

A CRANBOURNE West man has told of the moment he thought he was going to die when he had a gun and machete held to him during an aggravated burglary last week.
Two men pulled a shot gun and a large knife on the 60-year-old man, who did not want to be named, at 2.50am in his Elandra Way home on Thursday last week.
The man disturbed the two offenders when he got up to go to the toilet and they walked out his son’s bedroom.
“I had left the front door open for my son as he has lost his spare key,” he said.
“When I got up, I saw that my son’s bedroom light was on and yelled out ’you’re home now’.
“Two men came flying out of the bedroom and started threatening me.
“At first, I thought it was a joke and then next minute I had a shot gun pointed towards me and one of the guys was walking towards me.
“They had bandanas on, and it was dark, and the other guy had a machete.”
The man said the burglars soon told him to get on the ground and his fear heightened.
“I honestly thought at that moment they were going to shoot me,” he said.
“Either shoot me or whack me over the head with the barrel of the gun.
“I thought I was done for.”
The man said the offenders were in his home for about half an hour, with one holding a knife to him the whole time while the other was searching for money.
He said the man by his side allowed him to sit down and take medication as he was bleeding from his chronic illness he suffers from.
“He kept asking me where my son was and where does he keep his money because he owed them money,” he said.
“One guy just kept going in and out of my son’s room looking for money.
“I just kept telling them that they had the wrong house.
“There used to be two dodgy houses in our street but they recently moved, and I’m sure they got the wrong house.”
The men left after about half an hour with a safe that contained about $4000 of his son’s savings for a holiday he planned.
The man said the attack had really shaken him up.
“It’s really messed me up,” he said.
“I haven’t been able to sleep since it happened.
“I just keep thinking that they are going to come back and I’m paranoid over every little noise.
“You read about this stuff happening, but you never think you’ll experience it yourself.”
The men were described as one of Australian appearance and the other of Asian appearance, with scarves covering their faces.
Detective Senior Constable Mark Wiederhold said the incident was concerning.
“It’s obviously concerning that households are being broken into with such violence,” he said.
“Weapons like that being produced is concerning for police.
“I encourage residents to ensure their front doors are locked and take all reasonable efforts to secure their houses at night.
“These things are very distressing for the victims, and I’m just glad no one was hurt.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
