DIFFERENT objectives will be on the whiteboards for Casey Cavaliers men’s and women’s teams this week.
The Cavaliers women are fighting to maintain form, after their 18-point victory over Keilor Thunder on Sunday afternoon secured a two-game buffer and earned their spot in the second semi-final.
In the third versus fourth battle, the Cavaliers held onto their higher booking with a match-breaking 23-10 final term to knock off back-to-back top four teams following last week’s 67-58 win over Southern Peninsula.
Both remained in the fight at the final change, with the Cavaliers up 46-41, but cooler heads prevailed to knock in a match-winning 69-51.
Amy Mcfarlane had a monster 17 points, while Renae Mokrzycki (13 points, eight rebounds), Alex Keates (10 points, six rebounds) and Jess Szalek (eight points, four rebounds) controlled the front court.
The Casey men couldn’t repeat the success, downed 80-90 by the Thunder and will look to this week to bow out of the season on a high.
Stephen Michalski led from the front with 21 points, while Dylan Wayman (15 points, six rebounds) and a double-double from Ash Szalek (11 points, 10 rebounds) created a great working trio.
It was a battle of the three-pointers, with 19 sunk between the two sides as Tim Morgan, Michalski and Wayman bagged three apiece for the Cavaliers.
Sitting seventh and two games outside the top four, it is season’s end for the Cavaliers men, but they can ruin Western Port’s finals chances on Sunday with their final match of the year.
Both Casey teams vie off against Western Port Steelers on Sunday afternoon, with the women starting at noon and the men at 2pm.
