THREE Cranbourne students were recently panellist at an international conference were teachers could pick their brains about education.
On Tuesday 21 May, St Peters College VCE students Jayde Kelly, Letisha Adams and Perri McLean accompanied transition co-ordinator Rivonia Pereira to the Girls in Education International Conference held in Melbourne, attended by teaching staff from all over Australia and New Zealand
Ms Pereira said the group got to hear from a number of presenters including opera singer Tania De Jong and well known GP and radio psychologist Doctor Sally Cockburn.
“We were thoroughly engaged while listening to the amazing Dr Sally Cockburn as she encouraged teachers to engage, energise and empower young women in education today,” she said.
Ms Pereira said the three girls then took part on a student panel where they were questioned on their education as a whole, specific teaching and learning strategies that concerned them and how schools could improve in order to improve the overall learning experience.
“Six other girls attended the conference in which about 250 teachers were able to ask their most want to know questions regarding issues from self-harm to what teachers do best,” she said.
“Our girls demonstrated great maturity and articulation during the panel and were highly praised and recognised by both teachers and principals from both Victoria and interstate.”
On her return to the college, Ms Pereira spoke to the teaching faculty about how proud she was of the girls.
“I wanted to publicly acknowledge these students and let them know how proud the college is of them,” she said.
