WORKS are now underway on a new Catholic primary school to open in Cranbourne East next year.
Catholic Bishop of Sale Christopher Prowse turned the first sod at the site of the new St Thomas the Apostle Catholic Primary School on Tuesday 28 May.
Bishop Prowse said the turning of the sod symbolised the beginnings of the new school and parish.
“Catholic education is the jewel in the crown of the new development at Cranbourne East, and I am pleased that the first stage of St Thomas the Apostle Primary School will be open at the start of next year,” he said.
The new school’s name was one of three suggested by former Cranbourne parish priest Father Andrew Wise.
Bishop Prowse said he selected St Thomas because he was one of the first evangelisers who took his mission to India to establish the church. He said this was particularly appropriate for Cranbourne East, with many residents coming from Kerala in the south of India, where St Thomas established the Church.
The current principal of Don Bosco Primary School in Narre Warren, Brendan Marrinon, has been appointed foundation principal of the primary school which will open its doors at the start of next year.
Enrolments for all grade levels are now open.
