THE Cannons Creek Residents’ Association are thrilled VicRoads has taken the first step to improving a dangerous intersection.
But the group said there was still more that they wanted done to ensure the safety on the roads of local motorists and passers-by.
Secretary Ian Cullen said the group raised their concerns with the staggered intersection of Tooradin Baxter with Cannons Creek Road and Fisheries Road a few years ago.
“There are a lot of accidents at that corner and we have been in touch with VicRoads about it quite some time,” he said.
“We also have a concern with the Fisheries Road and South Gippsland Highway intersection, but the other one is more urgent.
“We have to negotiate these two dangerous intersections when travelling to and from Cranbourne.
“There’s a few elderly people living in the creek too, so it’s worrying for them.”
Mr Cullen said the intersections where dangerous for a number of reasons, but particularly because Tooradin Baxter Road was 100km/h zone.
“We’ve asked VicRoads to reduce the limit to 80km/h on a few occasions, but they have rejected that,” he said.
Mr Cullen said the group has had correspondence from VicRoads saying they have put the need for roundabout at the intersection on a priority list, and in the meantime, would install warning signs either side of the intersection.
“Everyone in the creek is pretty happy about it,” he said.
“There’s more we are hoping for, but this is a start.”
VicRoads did not respond to the News’ enquiry before going to print.
