A LARGE emergency was avoided on Tuesday due to school holidays after a gas mains pipe in Lyndhurst was fractured.
Workers were constructing a boundary fence around Lyndhurst Primary School when they struck a gas main about 12.30pm at the corner of Boland Drive and Brookwater Parade.
Cranbourne fire fighter Angus McDonald said it was lucky school students were on holidays because it made the emergency less complex to handle.
“About 10 houses on the opposite side of the street were advised to stay indoors and close all their windows and doors,” he said.
“Their domestic gas supply was also isolated to ensure there was no possible ignition due to pilot lights or anything like that.
“The road was shut for a two and a half hours for safety purposes and we had an ambulance on scene, but no one was treated.”
