RIDERS from across Casey can gear up for the 24th annual Riding of the Bounds event in May.
Residents from across the municipality will honour the tradition that began in Casey’s sister city, Berwick upon Tweed in the UK, over 500 years ago.
Riders on horse-back or in horse-drawn vehicles are invited to participate in this year’s horse riding course, which is about eight kilometres and will take around two hours to complete.
City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon and Cr Geoff Ablett will be riding on the day and encourage all those who enjoy horse riding to participate.
“Riding of the Bounds is one of Casey’s great traditions and embraces the farming and agricultural history of the municipality,” Cr Stapledon said.
“I encourage riders from near and far to bring their horses and be part of this delightful event.”
At the conclusion of the ride, participants will enjoy a barbecue lunch and an awards ceremony. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
Champion Rider – Hotspur Trophy, Mayor’s Choice – King Robert The Bruce Trophy, Best Presented Group – Kay Irving Trophy, Best Hose Drawn Vehicle – Grace Darling Trophy, Most Australian Rider – Ned Kelly Trophy and Best Western Turnout – Sir William Wallace Trophy.
All riders who participate in the event must wear an Australian-approved equestrian safety helmet.
The event is on 5 May at Hillcrest Christian College, 500 Soldiers Road, Clyde North.
Registration starts at 8am, with the ride beginning at 10am. Early bird registration fees are $15 for individuals, $25 for families (of no more than four riders) and $60 for groups of up to 10 riders.
After 26 April, fees are $25 for individuals, $40 families and $80 for groups.
