Casey Sportsperson of the Year – Karen Dawson
WHEN Karen Dawson was told of her nomination for the Casey Sportsperson of the year, rather than celebrate, she declined.
Unsure about why she had been selected, Ms Dawson believed because she had recently taken a step back in her responsibilities she was not a deserving nominee.
However she became a little more than a nominee on Saturday, when 30 years of service to the Doveton Cricket Club, as well as 18 years to the committee of management of Reid Robinson Recreation Reserve earned her the title of Casey Sportsperson of the year.
The Endeavor Hills resident said her life does not lay in the town she resides.
“We live in Endeavor Hills, but our life is in Doveton.”
Unable to attend the ceremony, Ms Dawson was shocked when she was informed on Saturday that the Mayor would be calling her later that night.
“I was very excited, but more humbled,” she said.
However despite the excitement surrounding the award, what really encourages Ms Dawson’s passion is the opportunities her work gives her.
She said her chance to work with the juniors at the Doveton Cricket Club has been a highlight of her volunteering.
“It’s about providing a place for kids to come,” she said.
“Being there for the juniors is the best thing.”
Ms Dawson has been an advcoate for free junior memberships for youths, constantly fundraising to get enough funds to provide local kids with the chance to play cricket for no cost.
She has also been the secretary, treasurer and Junior Co-ordinator of the Doveton Cricket Club.
Ms Dawson also mentioned that working with the recreational committee has provided her with many rewarding experiences, such as working with other community groups.
All this done, Ms Dawson has now decided to take a step back , a reason why she didn’t feel as though she deserved the award.
“Can you really accept something when you have taken a step back?” she asked.
