MADELINE Kent raised almost $5000 when she lost her locks for a good cause recently.
The News recently reported on Madeline’s plans to shave her head to raise money for the Kids with Cancer Foundation.
On Saturday 1 December, the 13-year-old’s hair came off with a final fund-raising tally of $4720.
Madeline said she loved her new look.
“I like my new look, but I get funny looks in public places,” she said.
“It’s so much easier to do my hair now. “Everyone has been giving me hugs and been telling me they are so proud of me.
“I want to thank my mum for being there for me through the whole thing and letting me do such a courageous thing.
“And I want to thank Stacey Anderson for shaving it all off.”
As a sufferer of Crohns Disease, Madeline has spent the last three years in and out of hospital.
It is during that time that she met many young people with cancer, something that led her to her decision to lose her locks.
“I realise how lucky I am to be able to go home when I am better, but there are so many kids that don’t ever leave,” she said.
“Last time I was in hospital getting my medicines done I went to the Starlight Room.
“There was a little girl in the room who had cancer and had no hair.
“I overheard her say to her daddy ‘how come she has hair, and not me, that’s not fair’.
“That’s when I decided that I wanted to shave my hair off.
“I think it’s worth it because every time I go into hospital there are so many kids with cancer, and every time I see a kid like that I want to tell them what I did for them.”
