A NEW centre for equine excellence is off and racing at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North.

The college also opened an administration centre and learning areas for its middle grades, also built as a result of a $550,000 Federal Government grant.
Ms Smyth said the new equine centre would support the local equine industry, which is significant in the region.
“It will mean that skills and trades can be passed on to a new generation to support an industry which has strong ties with our area,” she said.
“This equine centre will provide industry relevant training to engage students and equip them to be part of tomorrow’s highly skilled workforce.
“Congratulations to all at Hillcrest for their vision and commitment in seeking Federal Government support for local skills and industry development.”
Hillcrest marketing and promotions officer Stuart Alsop said the new facility would be used by several different groups.
“It will be mainly used by the students of Hillcrest Christian College involved in equestrian from years five to 12,” he said.
“We have another group of students involved in after school riding lessons.
“Yet another group are those hiring the facility to conduct competitions, clinics and rallies for equestrian activities.
“These range from pony clubs to Equestrian Victoria clubs.”
A number of courses an qualifications will be offered at the new trade centre including Certificate II in Racing – Stable Hand Mandatory Training, Certificate III in Agriculture – Horse Breeding, Certificate II Outdoor Recreation – Horse Riding Coach and Certificate III Racing – Track Rider.
“Projected total number of enrolments for the entire equestrian courses will be around 250 students in 2013,” Mr Alsop said.
“Of these around 200 will be either internal students from year five to nine, the VET courses currently operating will continue for years nine to 12 both for Hillcrest and external students.”
