CRANBOURNE Greyhound Racing Club has thrown its support behind a new Relay For Life event in the area.
The Cranbourne-Narre Warren Relay For Life will be held from 17 to 18 November, and in the lead-up to the event the club will be doing a number of things to show their support.
For race meetings each week in the lead-up to the event, the club will name a race after the event.
During the four race meetings before the event, the club also will donate $100 to the Cancer Council for every number one greyhound – the dog wearing the red rug – that wins.
Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club chief executive Tony Wright said that, as well as providing the venue for the event, the club wanted to support the fundraiser in other ways as well.
Relay For Life is an overnight, community event where teams of 10 to 15 people participate in a relay-style walk or run to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
This year will be the first Cranbourne-Narre Warren event, allowing more Casey residents to get involved.
The event will be one of two in municipality, with the 10th annual Casey-Cardinia event to be held at Akoonah Park in Berwick in March next year.
Chairperson of the Cranbourne-Narre Warren event, Nicole Ryan, said she was very passionate about raising funds for the Cancer Council.
“We all join relay for different reasons but at the end of the day it is because cancer has touched us in one way or another and we want to help make this a cancer free world,” she said.
“In January 2003 my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It tore us all apart because
cancer just doesn’t affect the person diagnosed, it affects the whole family.
“My family has been involved in relay for eight years now and during that time I have been team
captain for three years and chairperson for Casey for one year.
“I have now been asked to chair this brand new event and I know that together with your help we can make this event a huge success.
“It’s now up to you – register a team, join the committee, or do both and let’s do all this together.”
The event will be held from Saturday 17 to Sunday 18 November at the Cranbourne Racing Centre.
