House gutted, hearts opened

By Bridget Cook
THE Devon Meadows community has thrown its support behind a local foster carer whose house was destroyed by fire recently.
Devon Meadows resident Joan Graham’s house was engulfed by fire on Friday 22 June about 7.30am.
Ms Graham is a familiar face around the local community, having lived in the town for 20 years and has opened her home to more than 200 foster children during that time.
On Friday the Devon Meadows Primary School, where Ms Graham has sent many of her foster children, held a community barbecue to raise much-needed funds to help Ms Graham rebuild her life.
The school also held a free dress day last week and raised more than $600 for Ms Graham’s cause.
Devon Meadows Primary School principal Brett Bell said they hoped to raise about $1000 at the barbecue, but managed to raise more than $2000.
“There was a great community feel at the school,” he said.
“We had both school parents and members from the community attend, maybe 200 people, plus the 250 students from the school.
“It was great to see the community’s generosity continue throughout the week.
“Joan spoke at our final assembly and thanked everyone for their generous support – she was overwhelmed.”
The Pearcedale Bakery, Pearcedale Butcher and Don’s Meats in Junction Village donated food items for the event.
Last week, the News reported on Ms Graham’s devastating loss and the way the Casey community had rallied behind her.
Ms Graham was outside battling the flood waters in her paddocks on the morning of the fire, when she returned inside to find the living area was full of smoke.
Ms Graham quickly woke up her daughter Leanne, 47, and her two foster children and they all got out of the house.
The house was completely destroyed by the fire and all they got out with was the pyjamas on their back.
Ms Graham, who is now living at her daughter’s home, said they had received so many donations or different kinds.
“The emotions are running rampant at the moment,” she said.
“I just can’t thank everyone enough.
“Thank you is not enough for what some of them are doing.
“I feel so humbled by it all. I’m usually doing things for other people, so its not easy being on the receiving end but I’m so grateful and thankful.”
The school is collecting money, clothes, toys and offers of furniture on behalf of Ms Graham.
A bank account has also been set up at the Westpac Bank, under Joan Graham, BSB: 033686, AC: 477364 for those wishing to donate.
