Carols hits the right note- The Carols by Candlelight finished with a bang. 74946

By Bridget Cook
THE Rotary Club of Cranbourne’s annual Carols by Candlelight were a hit this year with huge crowds turning out to sing in the festive season.
Organisers said the event on Sunday night attracted, “one of the biggest crowds ever” with X Factor singing sensation Andrew Wishart the star attraction.
“Thank heavens we were at the Cranbourne Racecourse which was able to handle the numbers with ease,” carols committee chairman Peter Carpenter said.
“Andrew Wishart was great and even when not performing he spent so much time signing autographs. It was a wonder that he could still strum his guitar.
“As usual, I thought Dave Whalen, ably assisted by Cindy Warren, did a great job as MC keeping things moving along and tying the whole show together.”
A range of performers took to the stage on the night including young performers Ryan Griffiths and Allira Farlan, established country and western stars Ian Castles and Chris Newman, local songstress Jacqui Lang and Elvis impersonator Paul Mercieci.
New to the carols this year were Frankie Stevens of Frankie and the Highlighters fame and barber shop quartet NQV.
Mr Carpenter said the night was a great success, and included a visit from Santa.
“Everyone in our club was very happy with how the event went,” he said.
“It was our best ever and everyone got quite a buzz.
“The fireworks at the end are a highlight and many people look forward to that part of the evening.”
Mr Carpenter said the carols were a popular event because there’s something for all ages.
“The carols make a great night because the entertainment is family orientated,” he said.
“The free sausage sizzle and cordial is that little bit extra for a show that can be watched for free if people do not have much money. Many people do not have a lot of spare cash at Christmas time.”
Mr Carpenter thanked all the sponsors for making the event possible and the City of Casey for their support.
The Rotary Club of Cranbourne is looking for new members to enjoy fellowship and help with its community projects.
People interested are asked to contact president Paul Rice on 0418 369 149.
