MORE than 500 people turned out for a family fun day last month at Cascades on Clyde to celebrate the naming of the estate’s new wetlands park.
City of Casey councillor Geoff Ablett announced the winning name – Nunkeri Park on Clyde – for the wetlands park, which is currently under construction.
Local resident Nicole Blaedel, who came up with the name, was the winner of the competition to find the best name, which ran for the past two months.
The word ‘Nunkeri’ means ‘thing of beauty’ in a local Aboriginal tongue according to Nicole’s internet research.
Ms Blaedel won a $2000 voucher, which, she said, would be used to buy a new camera.
Cranbourne Eagles Football Club president Jerry Kelly, who cooked more than 600 sausages with the help of his team, was also a winner, taking home the iPad raffle prize.
Cascades development manager Tony Rogers said he was “overwhelmed and inspired” by the turn out and excited about the progress made on the lakeside parkland. When complete, the 14-hectare wetlands will not only serve an important drainage function, but will create a beautiful environment for families and friends to gather and meet.
