Tot injured by lawnmower

A LYNDHURST boy suffered serious injuries on Tuesday night when he was run over by a ride-on lawnmower.
Paramedics, including an ambulance helicopter, were called to the Lyndhurst property about 5.15pm after the lawnmower apparently reversed over the four-year-old boy.
Intensive care paramedic Andrew Burns said they were told the boy was behind the ride-on lawnmower when it reversed and he went under it.
Mr Burns said the boy suffered horrific injuries to his lower abdomen and upper leg.
“It’s probably fortunate that the heat of the lawnmower blade actually helped seal some of the damaged blood vessels and reduce the severity of the bleeding,” he said.
“The boy was quite upset and we gave him pain relief through a nasal spray which is much easier to give to children when the are upset, than trying to put a needle into their arm. Once he settled we were able to put a needle in his arm and give him some more pain relief and some intravenous fluids to help stabilise his blood pressure.”
The boy was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.
