WENDY the puppet is teaching kids at Kilberry Valley Primary School about literacy and numeracy.
The hand-made puppet features in a four-minute, award-winning video teaching students about place value.
On 31 August, the video won the Numeracy and Literacy Film Award in the Southern Metropolitan Region.
Last year, the school entered the competition and won first prize for a video about English as a second language.
“We were very luck to win two years in a row,” said Mark Bailey, the school’s television studio manager.
This year, a small group of Year 6 students brainstormed, scripted and filmed the video.
Budding scriptwriters were chosen for their interest in writing and filming.
Year 6 student Eden Church worked on the project.
She’s bursting with excitement about the entertaining video.
“It was really fun. It was really good knowing we’d put all of that effort in and won,” she said.
Kilberry Valley received a $2000 grant for taking out first place.
In the video, Wendy the puppet asks students about what maths means to them.
“We enjoy numbers, do you?” she asks.
The video features a sing-a-long and graphics as well as some emerging acting talent.
“It was fun working as a team. I love English. I was a bit nervous that I had to go up on stage and accept the award on behalf of my school,” Year 6 student Kojitha Senanayake said.
