MOTORCYCLE Riders Association Victoria member Mick Doedee has participated in the MRA Cranbourne GP run for the last five years.
The 50-year-old has been involved as the chief marshal for the last two years, and will be continuing his role this year at this year’s GP run, which will see him and other marshals get people assembled as neatly as possible.
Mr Doedee said the social scene was what initially drew him to participating in the GP run.
“It’s a fun thing to do – you get a real buzz from riding down to the islands with all the kids at the start line waving you off,” he said.
“Then there are people all the way down to the island waving as you pass so it’s a real social buzz.”
He said the unrestricted nature of motorcycle riding was what he enjoyed the most.
“I love the freedom associated with it,” Mr Doedee said.
“You’re not surrounded by four walls like you are in a car, it’s so easy to find parking and you save time in traffic.”
Mr Doedee has been riding motorcycles for more than 25 years and a member of the MRA for the last 16 years.
Despite motorcyclists having a rough image in some people’s eyes, Mr Doedee said the GP run was very much a family-orientated event and encouraged everyone to get involved.
“Motorcycling has a pretty rough image in some people’s eyes, so anything we can do to alleviate that is always good,” he said.
“It’s a family day, designed for everybody and caters for all ages. There’s a thrill and a big social buzz to it.
“You get the chance to ride in groups often as part of a club, but the chance to ride with more than 5000 other motorcycles is another story yet again. It’s quite a massive spectacle once you see it and hear it.”
