YOUNG Cranbourne chess players will be able to hone their skills at a new chess club being run at the Cranbourne Community House.
The junior chess club will offer children eight years and up the chance to develop their skills and compete with others for two hours from 4.30pm every Tuesday afternoon during the school term.
Organiser Charles Abrahams has recently moved to Cranbourne but has been running a similar club in the Knox area for seven years.
“I have over 60 children (at the Knox club), the numbers have just been phenomenal,” Mr Abrahams said.
“This is the first junior chess club in the Cranbourne area, I’m sure the new club will be just as successful.”
Mr Abrahams said the club would introduce children to chess and teach them how to play the game properly in a supportive environment.
“There will be games and food and drink and as the club grows they will get to play for trophies as well,” he said.
Parents are also welcome to attend the sessions, which cost $2.50, and see the benefits of playing chess first-hand.
“Chess is entertaining for the child and it is also an educational tool. Children who play chess are better equipped to solve problems,” he said.
