THE Pearcedale community has lost two valuable members with the passing of local identities Fred Greenwood and Henry Mosley.
Mr Greenwood died on Friday 16 September, aged 86, and Mr Mosley died on Monday 19 September, aged 94.
The two were good friends for about 50 years after share-farming on Mr Mosley’s property in the 1960s.
Both men were heavily involved in the community, having been long-serving volunteers at the Pearcedale CFA.
Mr Greenwood held a number of positions throughout his involvement of almost 60 years, including president, captain and first, second and fourth lieutenant.
He was given a life-membership of the Pearcedale Fire Brigade for 20 years service, an honorary life-membership of the CFA for 30 years of service as well as a National Medal and two clasps in 1977 for 15 years of diligent service.
Mr Greenwood was involved in many things in the community, including school committees, flower show committees and was also a trainer for the Langwarrin Football Club a few years ago.
Brigade captain Kevin Sullivan said he was a great friend.
“He had a funny personality – he could be grumpy as all bugger one minute, and good the next, like if you had an argument, you walk away and then be the best of friends,” he said.
“The sun never went down on an argument for Fred.”
Mr Mosley was also made a life-member of the Pearcedale Fire Brigade and CFA, as well as the Rural Fire Brigades Association. He was presented with a National Medal and one clasp in the same year for his diligent service.
Mr Mosley was a passionate dairy farmer nearly 50 years. He became the first treasurer of the United Dairy Farmers of Victoria in 1976 and took the role of deputy-chairman of the Victorian Dairy Industry Authority in 1977.
Good friend Lil Griffiths said Mr Mosley was a wonderful man with a great sense of humour, and an intelligent dairy farmer who was very proud of his roles in the community.
“He was a man of marvellous integrity and was always considerate of other people,” she said.
“Absolute gentleman, polite to everyone and would always do the right thing by people.”
Mr Greenwood’s funeral was held last Wednesday at Pearcedale Fire Station, which was filled with more than 100 guests.
He leaves behind his wife of 65 years Ruth, four children, Rosemary, Margaret, Edward and Lisa, five grandchildren, Caroline, Belinda, Graeme (Frog), Kim and Richard and five great grandchildren, Bailey, Madelyn, April, Violet and Jacob.
Mr Mosley’s funeral was held last Sunday at Roseden in Ferguson Valley in Western Australia.
He leaves behind hischildren Sally, Lu, Jo and Derek, and grandchildren Steven, Craig, Lynette, Russell, Mark, Tony, Tim, Justine, Pippa, Geraldine and Grace.
