CRANBOURNE Primary School conducted a full week of activities to celebrate National Literacy and Numeracy Week.
Holt MP Anthony Byrne joined the children for one day of the week, which was held between 29 August and 2 September, as the guest reader at the Read for Australia activity.
Mr Byrne read The Bear’s Lunch by Pamela Allen, which was followed by all students on an interactive smart board.
“This activity was great fun, particularly seeing the kids being so enthusiastic about literature,” Mr Byrne said.
“Literacy and numeracy are vital skills for all young Australians, enabling them to get a great education and to go on to further study or work.
“National Literacy and Numeracy Week is a great reminder for us all that well-developed literacy and numeracy skills are the foundation of a student’s education.”
Another activity students at Cranbourne Primary took part in, along with 1500 other schools across the country, was Reach for the Stars.
Cranbourne Primary School principal Cheryl Van Deurson said the event was a mass participation numeracy exploration, asking students to help collect data from observations and measurements in their classrooms.
“Students will collect their local results and organise them to examine and compare their classroom to classrooms all over Australia,” she said.
