THE JRock eisteddfod went off with a bang and Kilberry Valley Primary School was front and centre.
Each year primary schools from Melbourne enter students into the JRock eisteddfod to showcase a unique performance of their choice.
The Hampton Park primary school had a cast of 65 which performed on Tuesday 16 August at Hisense Arena in Melbourne.
Students from nine other primary schools performed on the night.
“The students performed The Storyteller, which is four stories from Hans Christian Andersen,” performing arts teacher Jess Crea said.
The music and dance routine was inspired by some of Andersen’s more famous work; The Ugly Duckling, The King’s New Clothes, Thumbelina and The Red Shoes.
Students in years five and six were invited to audition in early February.
“Since then they have rehearsed once or twice a week during recess,” Ms Crea said.
Some of the student performers had drama and dance training while others wanted to experience the chance to show off in front of an audience of more than 2000.
Kilberry Valley Primary School walked away with three awards on the night including excellence for costuming in character, sound track and performance skills.
“It’s good for the kids to have a commitment every week. They also have to work as a team, they have to be up to the standard of the others,” she said.
