Sports clubs a family affair

THE Casey sports community gathered this month to celebrate, recognise and reflect on the positive programs which are taking place in more than 200 sporting clubs across the municipality.
The fifth annual Casey Sports Forum was held at the Ranfurlie Golf Club in Cranbourne on 10 August.
More than 40 volunteers from 20 of Casey’s sports club, councillors and representatives from VicSport and Athletics Victoria attended the event where Australian netball star Bianca Chatfield was the guest speaker.
Addressing the forum, City of Casey Mayor Shar Balmes said that sporting clubs played an extremely important role in Casey.
“I’ve always thought of sporting clubs like a natural extension of family; an extended community that is supportive, promotes teamwork and unity, and where everyone has the opportunity to participate,” she said.
“The City of Casey is committed to helping local sporting clubs to increase participation, ensuring their sustainability, and providing avenues for people to get involved in both recreational and elite level sporting opportunities.
“The council’s award-winning Sports Development Plan is the playbook we’ve been using over the past three years to help achieve these objectives.
“This plan is now being reviewed to ensure council keeps meeting the needs of its rapidly growing sports community.”
The City of Casey Sports Development Plan focuses on increasing the community’s participation in sport and active recreation, facilitating sports club development, and establishing new clubs for emerging new neighbourhoods and to meet demand in existing ones.
The council has also allocated almost $5 million in infrastructure and sports grounds that local clubs need.
