Eye out for seniors

By Emma Sun
CASEY residents over the age of 55 are encouraged to enrol on the Cranbourne Police Senior Citizen registry.
The registry is aimed at keeping tabs on seniors including regular check-ups to ensure everything is going well.
While it involves the Cranbourne police, it is not restricted to Cranbourne residents, and everyone in Casey is welcome to join. Information is kept securely, and only the two co-ordinators and the police have access to it.
Each resident is issued with an ID card, and the name and ID number are on the register to enable emergency services to contact the Cranbourne police station when necessary.
Yvonne Hempston, a co-ordinator at the Cranbourne Police Senior Citizen registry, said volunteers called everyone on the registry to ensure everything is going well.
“We chat to them to make sure they’re okay, and if they’ve got any problems we try to look it up for them,” Ms Hempston said.
“Often, they’ll call us and ask where they can get a plumber and we just look up the lists in the directory and call them back.”
Ms Hempston said the volunteers also got a lot out of helping out the elderly residents.
“We send them out birthday cards too, something we like to do,” she said.
“We get the seniors ringing us back saying thanks sometimes and it’s great.”
For more information, call Yvonne Hempston or Coral Saggers on 5991 0625.
