Extra miles of interest

By Bridget Cook
WHILE most students were enjoying their holidays last week, one local student took part in a special program to further her studies.
Lyndhurst Secondary College Kate Latchford was awarded a place at the ninth annual UBS Finance Academy in Sydney from Monday to Friday last week.
Kate was one of only 50 Year 11 students chosen from across NSW, ACT and Victoria to take part in the week-long, fully subsidised residential program at Macquarie University.
The program aims to give the students a practical understanding of global financial markets and highlight the wide range of finance related career opportunities available to them.
The Secondary School Principals Council in each state welcomed the initiative and assisted UBS in the selection process of students who demonstrated a flair for business, economics and other finance-related subjects, but may not have considered pursuing a career in financial services.
Over the course of the week, students will be provided the opportunity to listen to and interact with key members of the industry as well as gain a practical and working knowledge of financial markets through workshops, ‘day in the life’ presentations, and field visits to a live trading floor and CNBC’s television studio.
UBS chief executive said they were delighted with the ongoing interest by students and their respective communities in the company’s Finance Academy.
“The UBS Finance Academy continues to be one of the major pillars of UBS’s community program in Australia,” he said.
“We are honoured to have been able to play an important part in developing the knowledge, skills and talent of over 450 of Australia’s finance students to date.”
