Phone scammers target computers

POLICE are warning residents of a telephone and computer scam, which has already targeted a number of Casey residents.
Police received a report from a Casey resident about the scam this week, which matched the same report as another Casey resident who fell victim to it last year.
Police said on 24 August last year, the women received a call from a man, with a strong Indian accent, who claimed he was from Microsoft.
He then told the women that they had picked up that the woman’s computer was running slow as the warranty and licence had run out.
Police said the man then advised the women to turn on her computer, log in and visit website www.logmein123.com and enter her details, which allows the hacker to gain access to her computer.
The man then advised the women that they needed to spend $400 on anti-virus software to fix the computer, police said.
The women picked up that it was a scam after her computer crashed not long after.
Police said people should be aware that this was a scam and Microsoft does not operate in that way.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
