Sustainability Singled out

George Single's efforts as a local sustainable builder earned him a spot on the front cover of the 2011/2012 White Pages.George Single’s efforts as a local sustainable builder earned him a spot on the front cover of the 2011/2012 White Pages.

GEORGE Single has always been keen to spread the word about living sustainably.
Now his message – and his face – will be delivered directly to thousands of local homes and businesses.
The registered Green Living Master Builder found out last year he was to feature on the cover of the 2011/12 Pakenham/Cranbourne White Pages.
The theme for selection was ‘Australians Creating a Better Future’, which aimed to recognise community members who strive to conserve or protect the local environment.
He caught the attention of the selection committee following an Alternate Technology Association (ATA) open day held at his house when 50 people took a tour of the ATA member’s backyard to check out the latest ways to build sustainably.
“The attitude to building is changing,” George said.
The ex-chemist from London and retired fire brigade chief, ignited his passion for green living following a visit to Wales four years ago, when he stumbled across a sustainability expo.
In 2005, George’s dedication to sustainable building was recognised by Telstra Country Wide’s Property and Business Services Award in the Cardinia Shire Council area.
“I feel it is important for people to know how they can live sustainably. Without this knowledge, people cannot change their lifestyles. I’m honoured to be recognised as an Australian creating a better future,” he said.
George is also an avid volunteer for charitable causes. After the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, George and a team of volunteers built and auctioned a local house to raise $200,000, with all proceeds donated to World Vision to support the tsunami victims.
At a local level, George and his same team, became members of the Casey Cardinia Relay for Life team and have been raising funds for cancer research annually since 2005.
White Pages marketing manager Rachel Peile, said the company was impressed by the number of people from all walks of life committed to ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
“We felt George was a great example of an Australian Creating a Better Future and we are delighted to feature him on the cover of the 2011/12 Pakenham/Cranbourne directory,” Ms Peile said.
Distribution of the directory was set to start on 28 May and will take about six weeks to be delivered to all homes and businesses.
