Welcome rainfall goes up while water usage falls

SUBURBS in Casey received above-average rainfall in autumn, with some of the Melbourne’s highest figures recorded in the south east.
Melbourne Water collects suburban rainfall data to assist with its role as flooding and drainage manager for the metro area and beyond.
Figures from Melbourne Water’s network of data stations shows that Cranbourne received 224mm, 49mm more than its long term average, Berwick received 245mm, 77mm above average and Hampton Park received 179mm, 38mm above average. Almost every suburb across greater Melbourne received above-average rainfall in March, April and May.
The catchments that feed water into Melbourne’s dams also received above-average rainfall, which helped storages post a rare gain in autumn.
Melburnians also continued their water-saving ways.
Total water consumption, residential, business and industry, in autumn this year was 963 million litres per day, compared to 977 million this time last year – a drop of 1.8 per cent.
