THE Try A Trade exhibition held at Cranbourne Racecourse was hailed a huge success, with students, teachers and parents from across the south east checking out the exhibits.
The exhibition, organised by South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) and the City of Casey, saw about 1600 students through its doors on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 May.
About 20 exhibitors gave the students a chance to check out their interactive displays, including William Angliss TAFE, Link Employment and Training, Chisholm TAFE, Apprenticeships Group Australia, Defence Force Recruiting and Victoria Police.
Organiser Mandy Stevens said the kids really got a good insight into the many trades that were on display.
“There were lots of trades on display – bricklaying, hospitality, engineering, electrical, business admin, hair and beauty were some of the trades,” Ms Stevens said.
“Kids were pretty impressed with the interactive displays because they actually got to try things hands on, like for hospitality they got to cook the pancakes.”
An evening session held on Monday also had a great turnout, with about 100 parents and children turning up to obtain information on apprenticeships and training available in the southeast area.
Students gave positive feedback on the interactive displays at the Try A Trade exhibition.
Emma from Dandenong said she enjoyed using the CNC machine to make name tags and Ayme Glen from Eagles Secondary College said the best part of Try A Trade was being able to attempt things themselves.
Ms Stevens said it was good to see the kids getting something useful from the exhibition.
“The kids got to do things instead of just taking home pamphlets,” she said.
“We look forward to next year’s event, which we hope will be bigger and better.”
