Businesses dig deep

By Bridget Cook
THE local business community has united to raise almost $60,000 for charity organisations.
The second annual Browns Sawdust and Shavings charity golf day was held at Settlers Run Golf Course in Cranbourne on 21 January.
A fund-raising event, which was attended by those who took part in the golf day, was held at the Cranbourne Tri-Codes Day in March.
The two events raised a total of almost $60,000, with $42,250 being donated to the E.J. Whitten Foundation, a leading men’s health charity, and more than $15,000 to Make-A-Wish last month.
Browns Sawdust and Shavings managing director Scott Brown, who organised the events, said those two charities where chosen as they were close to his heart.
His father died of throat cancer and Mr Brown had a scare himself last year.
“I couldn’t talk this time last year. I got the all-clear in the end but it was a bit of a shock at my age at least,” he said.
Mr Browns said his young niece had been affected by illness, so Make-A-Wish seemed fitting.
Mr Brown said he had been “blown away” by the support of businesses and others who had thrown their support behind the events.
