FLINDERS MP Greg Hunt is taking steps to help highlight the needs of children with autism to the local community.
With World Autism Awareness Day being held on Saturday, Mr Hunt has joined Autism Victoria and the Hastings-based Abacus Learning Centre to help raise awareness in the community.
A major part of the campaign is a 19-day, 500-kilometre sponsored walk around the Flinders electorate in July and August.
Along the way, Mr Hunt will attempt to visit as many schools and community organisations as possible to speak about thechallenges presented by autism and to encourage families to raise money for this worthwhile cause.
Autism Spectrum Disorder affects about 30,000 Victorians and is a lifelong condition.
A child with autism finds the world a confusing place and often struggles to communicate and socialise with other children.
Mr Hunt said while there was no cure, autism responded well to early intervention and assistance.
“Crucially, community understanding helps make life better for those with autism,” he said.
“During the course of my time in parliament, I have met many parents and families caring for a child with autism.
“What has struck me most forcefully is the struggle many of these families have in accessing adequate support and assistance.
“I believe a lot more can be done to support families caring for children with autism.”
The ‘Walk for Autism’ will begin on July 25 at Arthurs Seat and end on August 12 at Phillip Island.
Funds raised from the Walk for Autism will be divided between Autism Victoria and the Abacus Learning Centre at Hastings, which provides early intervention therapy for local families.
Mr Hunt is encouraging local residents to join him for all or part of the walk.
