A GROUP of Lyndhurst Secondary College students had a winning spirit when it came to their unit on recycling this term.
The year-11 VCAL class designed and built a replica F1 racing car out of recycled materials and entered it in a competition run by the Melbourne Grand Prix.
In about two weeks, the 15 students created the car using materials from the school and home including foam and cardboard, and used tent poles as wheel axles.
The students based their design on images they got off the internet.
Different groups were assigned to make different parts of the car and then some students painted it.
Two students from another VCAL class also wrote a written submission to go with the car about why they should win.
As part of entering, the students got to attend the Grand Prix last Thursday.
The competition offered the winning three entries the chance to have a real F1 racing car come to their school, along with Stuart Sykes – an F1 expert.
VCAL teacher Nicole Scott said the task was a great learning experience for the students.
“It was really good to see some of the students step up and take on leadership roles and direct other students on what to do,” she said.
“The students learnt about different materials and what can be recycled, as well as how to work well as a team.
“They are all very excited and proud about what they have created.”
