George good

By Bridget Cook
In August last year, the News reported on the elderly Cranbourne resident’s call for volunteers to help look after his six horses which he could no longer take care of due to his cancer battle.
Mr Smith said he could not part with his equine companions as they were his “only reasons for living”.
Horse lovers in Casey rallied together to help Mr Smith care for his precious charges, when more than 100 generous offers of helped poured in.
More than 60 people were included on a roster to help Mr Smith on his property.
The Good Guys also donated a heater to Mr Smith, and a skip was also donated.
Mr Smith held a barbecue in September to thank all local residents who had volunteered their time to help him out.
Mr Smith passed away on Wednesday last week.
Barrie Tapp from the Animal Cruelty Hotline, who helped Mr Smith during his plight, said although his death was sad, he had arranged a happy ending for the horses late last week.
“George left the horses to me in his will,” Mr Tapp said.
“I have now arranged a place for them to go in Kooroocheang, near Daylesford.
“It is like a retirement village for horse.”
Mr Tapp said he was pleased that he had found a home for all of them.
“George would have wanted it this way,” he said.
“This way all the horses get to stay together at a good home,” he said.
“Some of the horses still need ongoing support and medical treatment everyday, this way they will get that.”
The horses will be transported to their new home this week.
Mr Tapp said he would like to say a big thankyou to all the volunteers who helped Mr Smith through a difficult time.
He said he hoped to arrange a barbecue and bus trip to the horses new home in the near future for all the volunteers.
Mr Smith’s funeral will be held on Tuesday 22 March at St John’s Church, Bakewell Street, Cranbourne, from 1pm.
