IDENTICAL triplets Elyssa, Nikkol and Lilli have come out shaken but with only minor injuries after a car backed into their bedroom at 7.50am on Tuesday.
Mum Rachel Welsh said the four-year-old triplets were asleep in their beds when their neighbour reversed through his driveway and hit the side of their Cranbourne home.
“I don’t really know the full details, but the driveway is very long,” Ms Welsh said.
“Before he hit our house he ripped his own power meter off the side of the house.”
Ms Welsh awoke to a loud noise and the house shaking – which she likened to an earthquake.
By the time she made it to the triplets’ bedroom the girls had already been rescued by her husband’s cousin, who was staying with them.
“It happened very quickly,” Ms Welsh said.
“It took roughly 10 minutes to get them out but it felt like five seconds to me. Everything was going at overdrive.”
It was miracle the triplets escaped serious injury, as Elyssa was sleeping against the wall that the car went through.
“From the way it was sitting, it pushed her bed into the next one,” Ms Welsh said.
Lilli was sleeping on the bed furthest away from where the car hit, but became unconscious when she got pinned to her bed.
“I think (the rubble) flew over the other girls and landed on Lilli,” Ms Welsh said.
The girls are coping with the situation, and Ms Welsh said they were suffering a little mentally.
“Lilli is doing okay; Elyssa is the one that’s dealing with it the worst because she and Nikkol were able to see what was going on,” she said.
“Lilli was pinned and couldn’t see anything and by the time she came to she was out of there.
“The girls are a little jumpy and scared of noise. They’re scared to walk past the room.”
Elyssa received a gash to her head, and Lilli a small cut, which were patched up by the doctor.
The miracle is not the first for the family. When the triplets were born at only seven months in late 2006, they weighed at just over three kilograms between the three of them.
Ms Welsh said what has happened has very much been a miracle for her family.
“Absolutely, I’ve got no other word for it,” she said.
“We’d like to thank everybody who have been supportive and for their help.”
Police said the vehicle was reversing down a neighbouring driveway at the time of the accident.
They added the incident was still under investigation, and would make no further comment.
