PEOPLE likely to rack up large out-of-hospital medical bills are encouraged to register for the Medicare Safety Net.
The rebate is paid to individuals and families whose out-of-pocket costs for out-of-hospital medical services reach a threshold in one year.
Under the benefit, people usually receive a rebate of 80 per cent of their out-of-pocket cost.
People can register for the Medicare Safety Net online at www.medicareaustralia.gov.au or calling 132 011.
Medicare will contact individuals and families nearing a safety net threshold or people can check if they are nearing a threshold by visiting the website.
